Alisa enrolled in Music Together classes with her own children beginning in 2005, completed the teacher training in 2007, and began teaching in 2008. As a sociology professor with specialties in organization and community, she particularly appreciates the community-building aspect of Music Together classes –among the adults and children who are enrolled in a given class, the people across geographic regions who share the same musical repertoire, and those who take the true message o f Music Together to heart and start engaging in family and community music-making in all its forms.
Alisa is an active participant in the oral, come-one-come-all tradition of Irish music, playing fiddle in weekly house sessions, as well in a local Irish band, Ri Ra. She teaches Irish set dancing to adults, and sings in Ensemble Music’s a cappella group, Common Chord. Most recently, she has added hand drumming – African, Caribbean, and South American – to her musical calendar.
